What To Do If The AutoFill Won't Work as Expected in Excel

If the AutoFill function in Excel is not working as expected, you can try the following solutions:

  1. Check for errors in your data: Ensure that your data is formatted correctly and does not contain any errors or blank cells. If there are any errors or blank cells in your data, AutoFill may not work correctly.

  2. Check for formatting inconsistencies: Make sure that your data is formatted consistently throughout the range that you are trying to fill. Inconsistencies in formatting can prevent AutoFill from working correctly.

  3. Clear the AutoFill options: If you have previously customized the AutoFill options, you may need to reset them to the default settings. To do this, click the "File" tab, select "Options", and then click "Advanced". Scroll down to the "Editing options" section and ensure that the "Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop" option is selected.

  4. Use the keyboard shortcut: Instead of using the mouse to drag the fill handle, you can try using the keyboard shortcut. Select the cell that you want to fill, and then use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + D" to fill the cell with the contents of the cell above it. Use "Ctrl + R" to fill the cell with the contents of the cell to the left of it.

  5. Restart Excel: If none of the above solutions work, try closing and reopening Excel. Sometimes, restarting the program can resolve issues with AutoFill and other Excel functions.

By following these steps, you can troubleshoot issues with AutoFill in Excel and get back to working efficiently.
